As well as the daily threat of bombing, the people of Merseyside had to put up with the same wartime hardships as people in the rest of the country. Rationing meant that the supply of certain foods and household goods was limited. Materials for new clothes were diverted to the war effort, so families had to make do with ‘hand me downs’, as “first up, best dressed” became a familiar refrain throughout Merseyside. Silk was such a luxury item that some ingenious women crafted dresses and underwear from parachute silk!
