Reading on screen

Efficiency

Reading on a computer screen is more tiring than reading on paper.

What you see on the screen is not as clear as black print on white paper.

If you need to study in detail or at length, it might be worth printing the document.

Control the screen

You can improve the appearance of what is shown on the screen.

Set your browser or word-processor to use a sans-serif font - such as Arial or Tahoma.

Sans-serif fonts produce a sharper image on screen.

Set the font size to 12 or even 14 point size.

Control the window

Shrink the width of the active window until the line length reveals 8 - 12 words.

This is particularly useful when reading documents on the World Wide Web.

If a line contains more than 8 - 12 words, the text becomes more difficult to read.

Keep the column of text narrow, and if possible create a margin on the left of the screen.

Saving

Save the text to disk, then you can change its format for easier reading.

Remember that you can use PRINT PREVIEW in a browser before printing.

You can also COPY and PASTE text directly from a browser window into another program.
