Notes from talks Preparation Taking notes from talks is easier if you prepare beforehand. Learn the main headings, names, or concepts of the subject. Note-taking is easier if you know and can spell the key terms. Listening You should be an active listener. That is, you should do the following:
Watching Keep an eye on the speaker and watch for any visual signals or clues. Most tutors will give physical emphasis to important topics. Pay special attention to the introduction. This should announce the issues which are to be covered. Listen for a conclusion which draws together the main arguments. Digest Your objective is to record the main points of the talk. Don't try to write down everything that is said. Listen carefully to what the speaker is saying. Wait until the key issues or the main ideas are expressed. Record these rather than the detail which surrounds them. Question Enter into a silent questioning dialogue with what is being said. Do not take anything for granted, and be prepared to doubt - wisely. If you have reservations, write them down [in square brackets, like this]. Keep your own comments clearly separate from the notes of the talk. Layout You should try to reproduce the structure of the talk. The use of good page layout, tabulation, and headings will help. Information can be re-arranged later if necessary. Use generous margins, alternate page lines, and plenty of white space. Questions It is usually possible to interrupt the speaker for clarification. However, do this with restraint and discretion. If possible, wait until the talk has ended. Some tutors may provide handouts which list lecture topics. Reviewing Review and adjust your notes immediately after the talk. All the information should still be fresh in your mind. Some students even re-write their notes! Details can be corrected, and the main arguments emphasised. Check that the structure is made clear. |
