Source of the River Dane

Axe Edge Moor

Axe Edge Moor is high in the Pennine hills and it is here that the River Dane has its source.

The PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY of the area makes it an ideal place for rivers to start.

HIGH RAINFALL:
Axe Edge receives around 1500 mm of rain a year, with no particularly dry month. Snow also sits on the ground in winter providing additional water during the spring melt. This high input of water into the area allows the river to be fed with water all year round.

SOIL AND VEGETATION: The top of the moor is a Peat Bog covered in reeds and mosses. The soil and vegetation combine to create a "sponge like" storage of water, soaking it up when it rains and releasing it slowly over time.
